In a groundbreaking move towards digital innovation, Dubai has become the first government globally to introduce a fully integrated cryptocurrency payment system for public services. The initiative, a collaboration between Dubai’s Department of Finance (DOF) and global digital asset platform Crypto.com, was formalized during the Dubai FinTech Summit in May 2025.
Revolutionizing Public Sector Transactions
This pioneering system allows residents and businesses to pay government service fees using cryptocurrencies through Crypto.com’s digital wallets. Payments made in stablecoins will be seamlessly converted into Emirati dirhams (AED) and transferred to the DOF’s accounts, ensuring a secure and efficient transaction process. 
The initiative aligns with Dubai’s Cashless Strategy, aiming to transition 90% of all financial transactions to cashless methods by 2026. With 97% of government payments already digital as of 2023, this move signifies a significant step towards a fully digital economy.
Advancing Dubai’s Digital Economy
The adoption of cryptocurrency payments is expected to contribute approximately AED 8 billion ($2.1 billion) annually to Dubai’s economy. This growth is anticipated to stem from the expansion of fintech services and the broader adoption of digital financial solutions.
High-ranking officials, including His Excellency Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary General of The Executive Council of Dubai, have emphasized the importance of this initiative in reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global leader in financial innovation. The integration of secure cryptocurrency solutions within government payment systems reflects a proactive approach to embracing future economic and financial developments.
