With the threat of United Nations sanctions re-emerging, Iranian officials and European diplomats held what both sides described as “frank and serious” discussions this week aimed at salvaging elements of the 2015 nuclear deal.
The talks, held in a neutral European capital, come as key provisions of the UN Security Council resolution endorsing the nuclear accord are set to expire soon, potentially triggering a reimposition of international sanctions, particularly on Iran’s missile program.
According to European sources, the dialogue focused on Iran’s expanding nuclear activity, its recent acceleration of uranium enrichment, and concerns over transparency with international inspectors. Iran, for its part, reiterated its demand for sanctions relief and criticized the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement under President Donald Trump.
“The discussions were candid, at times tense, but necessary,” said one European diplomat briefed on the meeting. “There is still a narrow window to avoid escalation.”
Iran’s chief negotiator said the country remains committed to diplomacy but warned that Tehran would not accept new restrictions without concrete economic benefits.
The talks unfolded amid a backdrop of rising regional tensions and political uncertainty ahead of upcoming elections in both the U.S. and Iran. Western officials fear that if no diplomatic progress is made, Iran could move closer to nuclear weapons capability, prompting a new crisis in the Middle East.
UN officials have not publicly commented on the discussions but have urged all parties to “act with restraint and urgency” ahead of looming deadlines.
